From The News: Bears Prefer Rainier Beer

According to an article on CNN.com, it appears a bear was discovered passed out drunk at a campground near Seattle. The bear had guzzled three dozen cans of beer.

The interesting part of the report was the line: “It turns out the bear was a bit of a beer sophisticate. He tried a mass-market Busch beer, but switched to Rainier Beer, a local ale, and stuck with it for his drinking binge.”

Good thing I didn’t try Busch in St. Louis!

P.S.: As I like to do, I added links to various sites. Would you believe that both the Busch and Pabst (who do Rainier) sites ask for proof of age before letting you enter the site. Now, carding you when you drink is one thing. But carding you to get a picture of beer? That’s a bit much. What’s worse, the Busch site only allows two-digit dates, so an oldster born in 1913 can’t get in (it treats 14 as 1914). I guess you can’t visit a beer site if you’re too old either!

Observations on the News 2004-07-09

Bleh. I woke up this morning with a cough (probably a lingering effect from last week’s cold) that just doesn’t want to go completely away. It’s there at the edge of consciousness, tickling my throat, daring me to wake it up again. But I’ll be smart. I’ll use my Gigantic-Mug-O-Tea™ to keep it wet until I can get safely home and pummel it to death with Benydryl.

As I haven’t done news observations in a bit…

Observations on the News

Right to complain about ex-spouse protected. Evidently, the husband in a divorce case tried to get a gag order against his wife, so that she couldn’t badmouth him. The court, quite reasonably, viewed this as an impingment on her right to free speech. It’s nice to know that justice works sometimes.

‘Kerry Edwards’ Site Belongs to Bondsman. It seems the web site www.kerryedwards.com belongs to a bail bondsman, who pays $25 a year for the site. Naturally, since this weeks announcement, folks have come calling, including GOP folks who want to keep it out of the Democrat’s hands. Mr. Edwards has indicated he will offer the site on eBay.

From the why-o-why department: Spidey suited for stage. Variety is reporting that Tony Adams and Marvel Comics are looking to turn Spiderman into a musical. The plans, according to the article, is to have a book by Neil Jordan (“The Crying Game”), Music by Bono and the Edge of U2, with Julie Taymor (“Lion King”) directing. Color me less than excited.

I’m much more interested in going to see Spamalot, a musicalized version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Spamalot is planning to feature David Hyde Pierce (“Frasier”) as Sir Robin, Tim Curry (you name it) as King Arthur, and Hank Azaria (“Simpsons”) as Sir Lancelot. Originally, it was thought that Spamalot would hit Broadway the same time as a revival of Camelot; however, Eric Idle dismissed the confusion, stating “Surely only an idiot could confuse ‘Camelot’ and ‘Spamalot’ “. Spamalot will be directed by Mike Nichols, who last directed “The Apple Tree” (Bock/Harnick) in 1966. The book will be by Eric Idle (Monty Python), who collaborated on the music and lyrics with John Du Prez (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, “A Fish Called Wanda.”). Spamalot begins Broadway previews in early February 2005, so I’d expect to see it hit Los Angeles in 2007 or late 2006.

Its Too Quiet/Observations on the News 2004-06-23

Its Too Quiet

Now that Small and Feisty is out of the house, it’s too quiet. Normally, even when she it at her aunt’s, we can call and talk to her. She now has to write letters to us, and us to her, for the next 8 days. I’m looking forward to her first letter. Ah, old-fashioned communications.

On the upside, we were able to clean the house, and for a change, it will actually stay clean. Those of you with small children will understand :-). We plan to do more cleaning and decluttering as the week goes on. Bulky Item Pickup comes tomorrow to get rid of our old sofa, our old patio table, and misc. junk. Next will come the National Council of Jewish Women to pick-up and inventory our next donate load. Then we can start loading the garage with more junk.

We’re also working on eliminating another distraction in our life. The July Newsletter for our current congregation should be going in the mail tomorrow, and in it I publically indicate that I’ll stop doing the newsletter at the end of September. I’m done with my Religious Practices responsibilities; I’ve got a candidate for Newsletter Production and Website. We’ve picked up the paperwork for our new congregation, which is so much more warm and friendly than our old one. Although we’ll eventually volunteer there, we are making it clear we’re taking a year sabbatical from Temple volunteering. We like their two rabbis, and it looks like they will be doing the school right.

I’m at work today, actually getting some useful stuff done, with no headache. Woo Hoo. [Interesting note: Today for the FAQ, I got the question of the origin of the phrase “Hip, Hip, Hurray”. It was quite interesting.]

Observations on the News 2004-06-23

Authorization of Torture. Dubya’s administration released a legal brief that said “The federal torture statute will not be violated as long as any of the proposed strategies are not specifically intended to cause severe physical pain or suffering or prolonged mental harm”. There was a wide variety of techniques that were considered permissible and were designed to both create fear as well as skirt the legal letter of the law. These were later rescinded. Yet Bush said he has never ordered the torture of Iraqi or al Qaeda prisoners. This seem hypocritical to me. The original memos clearly created an environment that permitted such abuses, even if they were strictly ordered.

This is the same word-picking that everyone got upset about Clinton doing during his investigation (remember “it”). Yet we don’t investigate these abuses to the same level of scrutiny, even though these abuses have drastically reduced our authority on the international arena.

Dubya is not doing the job. Let’s send him a negative performance review in November!

Black Tea May Help Get Blood Circulating. Who needed a study to tell them this. I learn it every morning when I have my gigantic mug o’tea.

Mattel to Launch Barbie Clothes for Women. Oh, the pink, the pink, aaaaaagh! Luckily, however, they won’t find anyone to fit into them, because they will all be sized only for women with the proportions of Barbie.

Docs Rebuff Idea of Refusing Care to Lawyers. Evidently, a resolution was brought in front of the AMA suggesting that doctors could ethically deny non-emergency medical care to trial lawyers or their spouses. The AMA has indicated they won’t approve this, but it clearly indicates the risks our overly litigious society has brought us. Perhaps Tom Paxton got it right when he predicted in 1988 that in 10 years there would be One Million Lawyers. I’ve see the effect of lawyers to be really bad—leading people to avoid completely sensical things, or to do non-sensical things, because of lawyers. Do we really need all the warnings? Thank the lawyers. Yet, the law is an honorable profession, so what has preverted it to the extent we see today. I just don’t know.

Helena to Lease Goats to Get Rid of Weeds. The city of Helena MO MT (which I always seem to get in the game Transamerica) will be spending $11,000 to lease 850 goats so they can eat the Dalmatian toadflax, leafy spurge and spotted knapweed that choke Mount Helena. I’m not sure this will work. At Orange Empire, they brought in a batch of goats as a means of weed abatement. It didn’t work—the goats didn’t like the taste of the weeds in Perris.

McDonald’s gets low-carb Coke : Like it really makes a difference when you have it with supersize fries and a Big Mac.

Teacher suspended for washing student’s mouth out with soap. Well, they always threatened to do it — here’s one who did. This boy repeatedly cussed at a 3rd grade girl, and paid the price. The most telling parts of the story are the lines “The boy behaved for the remainder of the day and didn’t complain to his foster mother” and “More than 40 relatives of children in Thomas’ class have asked for her to be reinstated.”

Waiters Use Customer’s Card to Buy Phones. I always use this as an example as to why I have no problem using my credit card over the Internet. It is as safe as handing it to a waiter in a restaurant. You trust them after all. Right? Right?!?
