Observations on the News 6/14/04

Mattel to Launch Barbie Clothes for Women. Oh, the pink, the pink, aaaaaagh! Luckily, however, they won’t find anyone to fit into them, because they will all be sized only for women with the proportions of Barbie.

Docs Rebuff Idea of Refusing Care to Lawyers. Evidently, a resolution was brought in front of the AMA suggesting that doctors could ethically deny non-emergency medical care to trial lawyers or their spouses. The AMA has indicated they won’t approve this, but it clearly indicates the risks our overly litigious society has brought us. Perhaps Tom Paxton got it right when he predicted in 1988 that in 10 years there would be One Million Lawyers. I’ve see the effect of lawyers to be really bad—leading people to avoid completely sensical things, or to do non-sensical things, because of lawyers. Do we really need all the warnings? Thank the lawyers. Yet, the law is an honorable profession, so what has preverted it to the extent we see today. I just don’t know.

Helena to Lease Goats to Get Rid of Weeds. The city of Helena MO MT (which I always seem to get in the game Transamerica) will be spending $11,000 to lease 850 goats so they can eat the Dalmatian toadflax, leafy spurge and spotted knapweed that choke Mount Helena. I’m not sure this will work. At Orange Empire, they brought in a batch of goats as a means of weed abatement. It didn’t work—the goats didn’t like the taste of the weeds in Perris.
