(meme) Ask Me No Questions, I’ll Tell You No Lies

I’ve seen this meme from a number of folks, in particular, barelyproper, deedeebythebay, and tsgeisel. So…

Ask a question anonymously you wouldn’t necessarily ask in person, or wouldn’t want others to know you’re asking. I’ll answer it in another entry, and you’ll have your answer without having to admit you wanted to know it. The following caveats apply: I reserve the right to decline to answer a question, if it is something that I don’t feel is appropriate to answer in public (well, friends-only). I will, however and at my discretion, provide an indication of such a declination. If you want to ensure an answer, email your question to me at cahwyguy -at livejournal.com. Yeah, it won’t be anonymous, but at least you’ll get an answer.

You do have the option of posting anonymously. I’d say that I’ve allowed anonymous posting, yet I’ve never turned off that option. I have turned the option on to screen all comments though. I haven’t turned off IP address tracking, but then again, I’ve never figured out how to track IP addresses 🙂

So, have at it. I have made this a friends only post, so at least I know questions will come from friends, but nothing more than that.

Update: Alas, the system won’t permit a Friends-Only post that has an anonymous option. So, this is public, but I reserve the right to make replies Friends-Only.

(meme) Sing me no song! / Read me no rhyme! / Don’t waste my time / Show meme!

A meme for a Sunday Morning, artfully prepared by shutterbug93:

Five shows I wish I’d had the chance to see on stage:

  1. Tenderloin. An older Bock-Harnick musical, rarely revived, whose music and lyrics I absolutely love. I’ve heard the book was bad.
  2. Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public. I think this lasted perhaps a week, but again, I love the music.
  3. I Do, I Do. Not the original with Robert Preston and Mary Martin, surprisingly, but the revival with Karen Ziemba and David Garrison.
  4. The Life. A great Cy Coleman musical that, surprisingly, has never played Los Angeles.
  5. Steel Pier. A great Kander/Ebb musical that, surprisingly, has never played Los Angeles.
  6. Mail. A musical done by the Pasadena Playhouse that has never surfaced again.

There’s three hours of my life wasted:

  1. Sisterella, at the Pasadena Playhouse. Imagine Cinderella as done by Michael Jackson. Give me the money? Feh!
  2. Phantom of the Opera. Ahmanson Theatre. Overblown hype.
  3. Sugar, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion.

Five shows I’m glad I managed to catch:

  1. Radio Gals at the Pasadena Playhouse. Wonderful. Featuring the wonderful Klea Blackhurst.
  2. Heartbeats at the Pasadena Playhouse.
  3. Les Jazz at the Mark Taper Forum. Cy Coleman’s last show, while he was alive.
  4. A Class Act at Pasadena Playhouse.
  5. Chicago, the original production, at the Ahmanson Theatre.
  6. Two Gentlemen of Verona, Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, 1973.

I should note there are many other Pasadena Playhouse musicals that should be in the above list: Forever Plaid, Closer than Ever, Oil City Symphony, A Tuna Christmas, Blame It On The Movies, Only A Kingdom, The People vs. Mona, Do I Hear a Waltz, Play On, Showtune…

(meme) Musical Meme

A dessert following morning meme, based on an inspiration from shutterbug93:

The Musical Meme

  • Post a list of 10 shows (I did a dozen) you love
  • Have your friends list guess your favorite song from each show
  • When guessed bold the line and write a sentence about why you like that song.
  1. Two Gentlemen of Verona: Follow the Rainbow/Where’s North. A strong, brassy song.
  2. Avenue Q. Either “The Internet is for Porn” (because its so funny) or “I Want To Go Back To College” (ah, those were the days).
  3. The Wiz: Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News. A classic heavy piano song, sung by that classic heavy, Mabel King.
  4. Baby: I Chose Right. Guessed by shutterbug93. I just love the melody, and the sentiment, in this song.
  5. Heartbeats: Putting Things Away and The Rose. The former because I agree with the sentiment; the latter because it is so pretty.
  6. The Rothschilds: Overture. I just love the overture to this show.
  7. Seussical: How Lucky You Are. Love the words.
  8. A Day In Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine: Just Go To The Movies. Great Jerry Herman music.
  9. City of Angels: You Can Always Count On Me. Wonderful Cy Coleman.
  10. The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public: Brand New Start, although I’m Leaving Texas isn’t bad. Just like the tunes.
  11. Miss Spectacular: Las Vegas. The perfect Vegas song.
  12. The Most Happy Fella: Standin’ on the Corner (…watching all the girls go by). Guessed by shutterbug93. C’mon, if I express the sentiments in I Love My Wife, I’ve just gotta like this song!

Again, not always easy choices.

(meme) TV Meme

A morning meme, prepared by a variety of chefs, including talonvaki, tsgeisel, lordandrei, and shutterbug93. You know what they say about too many cooks!

The TV Show Meme

  • Post a list of 10 (I did a dozen) TV shows you watch (current or cancelled!).
  • Have your friends list guess your favourite CHARACTER from each show.
  • When guessed, tell us why you like that character.
  1. Chicago Hope. I had two favorite characters here: Lisa Catera (Stacy Edwards), just for the pun that they created in the name, and Alan Birch (Peter MacNicol), because I like anything Peter MacNicol is in!
  2. One Day at a Time. Barbara Cooper (Valerie Bertinelli), simply because I thought she was so cute.
  3. Bob. The 3rd or 4th Bob Newhart series. Of course, I liked Bob McKay (Bob Newhart) as well as Buzz Loudermilk (Dick Martin). I especially appreciated the episode where they parodied Barney.
  4. Meeting of Minds. A wonderful PBS series created by Steve Allen, who served as host and moderator, and who was my favorite “character”.
  5. Lou Grant. I really liked Bille (Linda Kelsey), although all the characters were great. A wonderful ensemble show. I still remember the show they did about The Original Spanish Kitchen.
  6. Numb3rs. One of the few current shows on this list. Of course, I like Charlie Eppes (David Krumholtz), the math genius. Man after my heart.
  7. Room 222. Alice Johnson (Karen Valentine). Yet another youthful crush. This is a show you don’t see anymore, but was basically a TV version of Up the Down Staircase.
  8. Star Trek: The Next Generation. Although I didn’t like his character when the show aired, Wil Wheaton has turned into a pretty neat guy, a nerd for our generation.
  9. Lunch Brigade. Sheriff John (John Rovick). Laugh and be happy, and the world will laugh with you. A philosophy for life.
  10. Grand. A quirky comedy that died too soon, just like Duck Factory. I liked Harris Weldon (John Randolph) for his attitude.
  11. The Smothers Comedy Brothers Hour and all revivals. Of course, Tom and Dick Smothers, Pat Paulson, and Mason Williams. A truly classic show.
  12. Trading Spaces. Sob. They fired Paige.

They didn’t say I had to make it easy, did they?

Update on Sunday, April 10: I’ll update these posts with the answers on Tuesday, April 12, so get your guessing in now!

Update on Tuesday, April 12: Updated with answers. No one guessed 🙁

(meme) Ubiquity Meme

Monday Tuesday Morning. While I wait for this headache to subside and my tea to cool down, it seems like time to do a meme. This time, we have the ubiquity meme, aptly prepared by japlady and terpsichoros, among others.

In this meme, you are supposed to list 10 things that only you have done. Well, that’s pretty hard, given the number of people in the world. However, the following are 10 things that I’m likely the only person reading this to have done:

  1. Gone hiking through the steam tunnels at UCLA while spaced out on codeine.

  2. Lost a watch with a Hebrew face somewhere on dirt Mulholland.
  3. Had the son of a famous composer for a math teacher.
  4. Been father to my daughter.
  5. Been given a ride home by Marvin Hamlisch.
  6. Had a brother die while at a summer camp.
  7. Seen Shep Cooke perform at McCabes in Santa Monica.
  8. Climbed from the mens room into 3514BH at UCLA… through the window.
  9. Hiked across the “Bridge to Nowhere” in the San Gabriel Mountains.
  10. Participated in a programming contest in Fortran.
  11. Thrown a sofa from the third floor of Boelter Hall into a trash-bin on the first floor.
  12. Had a math professor who was preparing for a sex change operation.
  13. Rode on Route 90, the Marina Freeway, right after it opened.
  14. Passed up the opportunity to literally play on the freeway.

Then again, there are things I have never done. For example:

  1. I haven’t visited all 50 states.

  2. I’ve never played a table game in Las Vegas.
  3. I’ve never lived outside of Los Angeles.
  4. I’ve never worked retail.
  5. I’ve never had a tattoo.
  6. I’ve never had a piercing.
  7. I’ve never had a bar mitzvah.
Although I’ve been to Paris, I’ve never been to Paris, but I’ve been to Perris. Further, although I live in California, I’ve never been to California. Similarly, although I’ve been to Mexico, I’ve never been in Mexico, and although I’ve been to Nevada, I’ve never been in Nevada.

  8. I’ve never been drunk.
  9. I’ve never been to Spain, but I kinda like the music.
  10. I’ve never been to Heaven, but I’ve been to Oklahoma. OK, I haven’t been to Oklahoma.*

As Shep Cooke says: The thought of growing old won’t scare me to death if I leave enough living behind.
