Shattered Expectations

As I was on the van coming home, I was planning on writing a blog entry about our upcoming trip to St. Louis and our going to see West Side Story tomorrow. Those plans changed when I got home.

As is common with many of us, I walked in, grabbed the mail, and went to the “reading room”… only to find a load of broken glass! Evidently, while I was at work, the tempered glass in our shower door decided to shatter. Lots of little pieces. I spent the next hour cleaning up the broken glass.

I can understand why it broke: all glass is an explosion waiting to happen, and stress can be released a long time after it occurs. Does anyone know how one goes about replacing just a shower door? Is it likely to be covered under warranty (we installed it in 1997)? What would I need to prove warranty? I think (based on some notes I could find on my old Windows 3.1 laptop) it is a Neo-angle door; I know we bought it at Home Depot.

Boxes and Styrofoam

Today’s task was to work in the garage. Specifically, over the years I have collected boxes. Boxes from old computers, in use mucho years. Boxes from long in use kitchen stuff. Boxes from stereo equipment. Boxes that will never be reused again. So, I decided to make some space today, cut them up, and recycle them.

So far, so good. However, I forgot about the junk inside of the box. Getting rid of the cardboard is easy. Getting rid of the assorted plastic bags and ties is easy. Styrofoam, however, is hard. It was designed that way. It’s not easy to break into smaller pieces. It fills up your trashcan. I think its going to take me a month or two to get rid of the damn styrofoam! [Plus, its been hot today in the valley, so I’ve been schvitzin’ like crazy. Isn’t that always the case when you work in the garage.]

Any good ideas on how to get rid of loads of large chunks o’styrofoam, in one swell foop?

A Tiring But Good Day

As noted earlier, today Small & Feisty came home from camp… and loved it. She wants to go back already; she’s campsick. I couldn’t be prouder. I think it has helped her as a person, I think she has grown… all together good. Camp is a good thing.

I’ve spent most of the afternoon configuring one of the two new computers, and it is about 95% done, except for coordinating networking between the systems and setting up printers and that rot, plus some miscellaneous software. I’m surprised at how easily everything has gone. For all we can bash windows, installation has gotten easier over the years. It’s a drawn out affair, tho…

The new computers will serve as a catalyst for our remodel, as to place them right requires rearranging some rooms. gf_guruilla came up with a great idea for the desk: go to Lowe’s and have them custom build a laminate counter top, and mount that on some file cabinets, with back 2×2 supports, for the desk. Seems like an easy custom desk. That’s why I married her—a great head on her shoulders (and I enjoyed the rest as well :-)).

Domestic Saturday

We’ve taken advantage of the absence of the forces of entropy (FoE, a/k/a Small & Feisty) to do some cleaning up today. We’ve straightened out FoE’s closets, done laundry, and (in general) done some household stuff that needed to be done. I also spent some time this morning updating the SCJ FAQ; I’ll upload it tomorrow. However, the updates won’t be reflected in the email retriever or the newsgroups yet—I’m still working out some problems related to the transition of the site off of Pacificnet to Cahighways.org (Westhost). I’ll play with that tomorrow morning.

Tonight, we’re going to do another thing that’s difficult with S&F around: go out for dinner and a movie, without having to worry about arranging for a sitter. We’re seeing a movie we couldn’t see with her: Fahrenheit 9/11.

The mail should be here shortly; hopefully we’ll have a letter from the Forces of Entropy. We were able to find a picture of her on the Camp’s Website (in the private bunknotes section), but (alas) it shows her walking away from the camera towards the climbing wall (so we don’t know if she’s happy).

Putting Things Away…

“Socks are just like expectations… one always gets away.”

Why is it that we always have a massive flurry of picking up and decluttering the house just before the cleaning crew comes? I guess we just have to make the house clean so they can…

[Correction added later: We declutter so they can do the heavy cleaning. If they decluttered, we’d never find anything!]
