Tipping: It’s Not Just For Cows Anymore

I’ve been in a bad mood today. For those that didn’t read my earlier post, it is because some vandals decided to have some fun at 4:15am this morning, and tipped my car, a 1999 Honda Civic DX, onto its side. I found out about this at around 5:00am this morning, when two LAPD officers showed up at my door.

We’ve gotten the car towed to the repair shop. After they are finished fingerprinting it, they will estimate the damage. Initially, there appears to be damage to the front quarter panel, the driver’s door, the driver’s mirror, the rear windshield wiper… plus cosmetic damage, possible frame damage, possible axle damage, and who knows what damage to the engine from being on its side (anyone familiar with cars know the effect of this?). All this from kids “having fun”. Grrrrr….

At best, we’re out $500 for the deductable, plus our stress and time. At worst? Well, the trade-in blue book is $5,600, and a rough estimate of repairs might be $5,000. Guess what this means, kids? You got it: the “kids having fun” may have just totalled my car, and quite likely, gotten me car payments again (because, of course, even an equivalent used car would be more). Using carsdirect.com as a rough estimation, an equivalent car is not available. Based on the prices of 1999 Honda Civics in general, I’d be looking at around $10,000. I’d also consider a Toyota Matrix, but even used, they are around $16,000. If I had to get a new car, it would likely be a Scion xA (MSRP: $12,780 – $13,580) or Scion xB (MSRP: $14,030 – $14,830), a Toyota Matrix (MSRP: $15,260 – $17,795), or a Honda Fit (MSRP: $13,850 – $14,650). However, I really want my Civic back. It was just getting broken in (only around 56K miles), and had no payments.

Will we find who did it? Unlikely. Of course, I all encourage you to focus good “Jewish Mother guilt” at whomever did this. Perhaps they will turn themselves in and leave a note on my door.

I’m pissed. I’m depressed. I’m grumpy. I’m angry. I’m antisocial, yet I want people around me. I hate this. First my shoulder, and now this.

Grrrr…..

I Want My DirecTV!

It’s been one of those days.

Today, the HVAC contractor was finishing all the attic work except for the pressure test. That all went fine… except sometime in their last hour, they bumped something in the attic… and our satellite TV went out. All receivers are “Searching for Signal…”. So, we called DirecTV for service. The first call was ½ hour of phone menus… only to be disconnected. I then found the site that tells you how to bypass the menus… and after 20 minutes on hold, got to a technician… who kept putting us on hold, and after another 20 minutes, told us he couldn’t schedule anyone until late Monday, and if we wanted to cancel it, we’d have to go through the menus again.

We hung up on him. Clueless. The worst technical support I ever had from DirecTV. So we pulled out the phone book, and have someone local scheduled from 12:00p-4:00p tomorrow. Grrrrr…. I just hope that it comes back so I can see the season finale of Big Love.

Before the service guy comes, NSS&F plan to see if we can find anything at an Estate Sale in North Hollywood.

I guess it is DVDs tonight…

Good Night… Yucky Morning…

Well, at least I’m at work. Now, if only I could find my focus. I know I packed it somewhere.

This morning has been travel hell. I woke up at 2:30a with a bad headache. Took two excedrin, when back to sleep. Got up at 4:40a, got to the COS airport around 5:20a… only to find that the Avis counter had no critters out yet, and there was a 40 minute security line. So I dropped off my keys and told them to fax me my receipt (they did), and waited in the security line. Finally got through that, and waited for the 7am flight. However, the airport was fogged in, so it didn’t board until 7:30a. We then sat on the plane another ½ hour. While sitting on the plane, I got voicemail from ellipticcurve, who was to be my ride back home… but she’s sick today. Finally made it back to LA around 10:15a, took the shuttle to work, and then walked to my building because the 2nd shuttle was late. Coordinated a ride home (luckily, another van rider drove in today, as the van wasn’t operating). Whew!

Last night, however, was fun. I got together with davek from BoardGameGeek. We met at Compleat Games and Hobbies (a real neat store) in downtown COS, and then went over to the home of another member of the Colorado Springs Gaming Group. I got in games of Vegas Showdown, Bohnanza, and 6 Nimmit (which also has a nifty online version). This was a real fun bunch of people, and I hope to came with them again, either when they are in Los Angeles, or when I’m back in COS.

Now, to get lunch and do some work…
