This Is My Birthday [Carol Hall]

OK, Folks, you know the drill. Allright everyone, let’s gather in front of our large, 13″, Black and White TV set, and watch as a tall, lanky man in a khaki uniform strides out, in front of a slightly calypso style ensemble, introduces himself as Sheriff John, pulls out his keyboard, and sings:

This is my birthday.
Maybe its time now.
To call up the doctor.
Make that appointment.
Do something radical.
Make me more beautiful.
Try to erase all the years.
Pull up my chin to my ears.
Bite off time’s ravages
Fight ’em like savages
Make myself newer than new.
But since it’s my birthday
I think I would rather
Sit home and eat ice cream with you.

One good thing about old lovers
Beyond what meets the eye
So come back underneath the covers
Let’s watch the passing years go by.

This is my birthday
Ought to do something
Learn how to tango
See what’s on ebay
Go somewhere wonderful
Make me more interesting
Snorkle an island that’s Greek
Climb up Mt. Everest’s peak
Cook vegetarian
Sing in Hungarian
Write my first novel
Write two.
But since it’s my birthday
I think I would rather
Blow out a candle with you.

One good thing about old lovers
Such sweet familiar paths they take
So come back underneath the covers
You are the icing on the cake

This is my birthday
Maybe you noticed
I bet you remembered
and got me my present
Maybe a Lexus
or tamales from Texas
or maybe some bubbly on ice
or something you wrapped really nice
Like diamonds and rubies
in a box of jujubees
All telling me love is still true.
And since its my birthday
I think I’ll just stay here
and open my present with you.

One good thing about old lovers
They know just how they should proceed
So come back underneath the covers
You are the only gift I neeed
You are the icing on the cake
Let’s watch the passing years go by.

This is my birthday.
