lrc has proposed the following interesting meme:
As a counterpoint to thing I’ve done that you haven’t meme, how about major accomplishments? Having a kid may not be unique, but it is something that defines some people’s lives.
Some of the things I’ve done that were big deals:
- Taken the time to be an involved father with and to my daughter
- Been a loving husband to my wife.
- Been Chair of ACM/SIGSAC.
- Been Chair of the Los Angeles Chapter of the ACM.
- Been Chair (4 years) and Tutorial Chair (15 years) of the Annual Computer Security Applications Conference.
- Been the author of numerous Final Evaluation Reports (Gemini, Amdahl, HP/UX, XTS-200, XTS-300).
- Served on the Interpretations Working Group, NIAP Interpretation Board, and OD Review Board for TPEP and CCEVS.
- Saved the US Government likely millions of dollars through the work I do.
- Wrote the initial version of the history section of the Perl Camel book, and serve as Perl’s Paternal Godparent.
- Developed and maintained the California Highways Web Page
- Been a co-developer, and served as maintainer of, the Soc.Culture.Jewish Frequently Asked Questions and Reading List.
- Initiated and served as moderator of the Liberal Judaism Mailing List.
- Co-Initiated and served as moderator for the Soc.Culture.Jewish.Parenting Newsgroup.
- Served in numerous volunteer positions for congregations, including Social Action V.P., Religious Practices V.P., Tot Shabbat Coordinator, etc.
- Been a resource to Caltrans!
- Developed the software for the UCLA Computer Club when I served as I/O Chairman (although I never set up a Glitter Trap (see #5)).
- Helped a lot of people, directly or indirectly.
What is interesting is that, unlike the uniqueness meme, most of these were done in my post-UCLA lifetime. Interesting that. Perhaps this is what school prepares you for: doing big deals.
