Friday News Chum

Yesterday was very busy, and I didn’t get a chance to clear out the links. So, instead of the Saturday Morning Funnies, here are some links for you to chew on:

  • Migraine Findings. Those who know me in person know I suffer from migraines. Luckily, mine tend to be lighter and non-disabling, but they are chronic and distracting. The WSJ had a really interesting article this week that posits a new explanation of migraines: they are not vascular, but due to a brain chemical known as CGRP, which appears to play a role in the transmission of pain, but not in other brain functions, such as cognition or mood. The theory  in the article is that migraines “hijack” the brain’s normal pain circuitry–essentially, the brain’s normal pain-sensory system, in which nerve endings send messages to the brain about a threat, goes awry in migraines.CGRP activity is decreased by triptans. More details are in the article.
  • I Want to Be a Refrigerator Repairman, Just Like My Dear Old Dad. A really interesting article from the LA Times where a daughter discovered what her father really did for a living. Hint: It had to do with a little thing called Project Corona.
  • Stamping It Out. An interesting opinion piece from the LA Times where it notes privatizing the Post Office is the wrong idea. In particular, it reminds people that providing a postal service is a constitutionally-mandated requirement.
  • Personal Preferences. So, according to the LA Times, stressed out men prefer fleshier women. Musta been a slow news day.
