Given that the news is filled with reports about Apples, I felt that today’s lunchtime news chum should be about food:
- That’s a Spicy Meatball. Have you ever wondered by chillies are hot? Why full-fat milk is better than water to cool your mouth? Wonder no more: This article from Australian Geographic explores the science behind chillies. Actually, quite an interesting read, including a discussion about growing techniques to make even hotter chillies. For something more local, here’s a story of an Ojai Chilli Grower, and his wife, who operate a restaurant called The Farmer and the Cook.
- Chip off the Old Block. You probably heard by now that Arch West, the inventor of the Dorito, died last week and was buried with his chips. Here’s something you probably didn’t know. Pepsi, which owns both Doritos and Taco Bell, is experimenting with tacos made from Doritos day-glow shells. You can only get them in Fresno and Bakersfield, for now.
- Going to the Dogs. Remember ‘Lil Nipper, the dog that listened to RCA radios and record players. Now he might want to watch TV. Nestle has launched an Austrian commerical for dog food that is aimed at… dogs. It incorporated high-frequency noises to get the dog’s attention.
Turning back to Apples. I’m pleased that so far they haven’t said anything about the Classic, and they announced that basic iPod sales are strong. That bodes well for their just leaving it untouched, which is fine by me. When you have a good product, leave it alone if you can’t make it better. Oh, you thought I meant the fruit? There’s only one decent apple for eating. Pippins… and they should be showing up in the stores now.
