Windows 7 Backup Software

I’m still working on completing our tech refresh at home. Today’s quandry: Backup Software. For years and years and years I used “Backup Exec”, which was originally a Conner product. It went through many owners, and I think at some point I switched over to Stomp’s “Back Up My PC” (BUMP). That was the backup product in Easy Media Creator 7.5. Well, it looks like Roxio abandoned that product; it certainly isn’t available for Windows 7.

So I’m in a quandry about which backup solution to use. I’ve done some searching around and have come up with the following candidates. I’d welcome opinions on these packages—the user reviews online are useless, with a pretty average 3.5* for any product.

• Windows Backup. There is backup software that comes with Windows 7, and it appears reasonably good. The main drawbacks appear to be that you can only specify the destination at the level of a complete drive, and with Windows 7 Home Premium, it can only backup to USB or CD/DVD.
• Roxio Back On Track 4 (the version bundled with Creator 11). The pro is that I’ve already got this. However, it seems to have a fair number of negative reviews, and no one talks about it much.
• DT Utilities PC Backup. I keep seeing hints that this is where Stomp ended up. It has gotten some good reviews. StompSoft appears to have become Migo Software, which had PC Backup, and DT Utilities seems to be the same thing as Migo Software.
• Symantec Backup Exec. This is where the original Conner product ended up. However, I’m not sure I want a Symantec product on my system, plus they never seem to state the price anywhere. One review I found is good, but this looks pricey. ETA: Per PCWorld, there is a desktop edition.
• Paragon Backup & Recovery 2010 Free Edition. This has the right price (free) and has gotten some good reviews, but I really haven’t heard about it. Has anyone tried it on Windows 7. ETA: PCWorld review of the 2009 version, 4.5 editor stars, no user reviews.
• Acronis True Image 2010. A pay product. I’ve heard some good reviews of this, but it looks like it is a single license, making it expensive. ETA: Here’s the PCWorld review, which garnered 4.5* from the editors, but only 1.5* from users.
• Norton Ghost. What is seemingly the 800-lb gorilla, but as with other backup software, it only gets mixed reviews. As with Symantec, I’ve grown hesitant about Norton products.

So, given the above possibilities, what is your recommendation, O Internet/Livejournal Guru?
