Oliver Twist?

Everyone is talking about Serenty. M’self, I’m more interested in people’s opinions of Oliver Twist by Roman Polanski (I’m interested in any portrayal of Fagin, m’namesake). I’ve read a number of reviews (M.E. Russell in the Oregonian, Ed Gonzalez at Slant, Phil Hall at Film Threat, Kim Morgan at Reel.com, the Portland Tribune, Los Angeles Times). Most focus on the director (this isn’t Polanski’s best work, it’s not up to the standards of Polanski, etc.) or they focus on the artistic side (it is beautifully shot, etc.).

I’m curious about how it stand up as a movie. I’d like my daughter to be able to contrast portrayals between a dramatic version and the musical, which she’ll see in November. Is it the sort of movie that will inspire one to read the original Dickens to see the changes (the musical Wicked got my daughter reading Gregory McGuire).

Has anyone out there seen it yet? What did you think?
(and what do you think of the new userpic?)
