Before I start packing (I’ve been out of town doing testing, and I return to LA today), a few theatre tidbits gleaned from my perusal of the news:
- The Jason Robert Brown musical “Parade” will be coming to Los Angeles July 11th, making its debut at the Neighborhood Playhouse.
- The Dolly Parton musical “9-to-5” will be making its debut September 3 (through October 19) at the Ahmanson Theatre as the opening production in their 2008-2009 season. Remaining productions in the season are not yet announced.
- The Hollywood Bowl will present 3 concert performances of “Les Miserables in early August 2008.
- The LA Drama Critics nominations have been announced, and I’m pleased to see a large number of nominations for both “13” and “Zanna Don’t”, both productions we have seen. “Winter Wonderettes” also has a fair shake of nominations. Still precious little for the Pasadena Playhouse, and I don’t believe they even think of Saugus and the REP when they build their lists.
In weirder theatre news, three words: “Shrek: The Musical” is bound for Broadway in Fall 2008. It features a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole, High Fidelity) and music by Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, or Change; Thoroughly Modern Millie). It will preview in Seattle from August 14 to September 21.
