Ensuring the Safety of Music on the iPod

No updates on the iPod loading (I’m actually at work today :-)). However, I would like to followup on my questions, as I am really looking for answers:

  • So far, I’ve only connected my iPod to my home computer. What will happen if I connect my iPod to a different computer, one that has either no music or different music in its library? Will iTunes attempt to sync, and thus delete the music from the iPod? Will it attempt to do this without prompting?
  • Does anyone have experience with software used to copy the music on an iPod back into an iTunes library, or into some backup structure? I’ve found references to two programs: iPod Access by Findley Designs and iPod Copy from Wide Angle Software. Has anyone used either of these programs? Again, how safe is the music on the iPod?

I’m asking these questions because my modus operandi is to rip CDs into my iTunes library, copy the library onto the iPod (I have manual mode set on my home computer), and then delete the music from the iTunes library (and this, it is not on my home computer). I don’t want to ever have to repeat the ripping process, so I now want to backup the iPod to a removable hard disk. I also want to be able to safely connect the iPod to my computer at work, without risking the music on the iPod.

Thanks for any help or advice you can give. I’m a clueless newbie when it comes to this iPod stuff.

ETA: About.com has some other possible program: CopyTrans (which appears recommended to them), as well as something called iGadget.

ETAA: Stuart at work also suggested Yamipod.
