Calling Cliff Clavin…

I wonder how many of the youngsters out there remember Cliff Clavin. If they do, we probably have TV Land to thank for it.

For those not in the know, this is National Dog Bite Prevention Week. As part of the week, the US Postal Service has released some statistics on dog bites and postal workers. Did you know…

  • Orange County ranks second in the nation for the number of mail carriers bitten by dogs. First place goes to Houston TX, where 108 carriers were bitten. Indianapolis IN was third with 83 bites.
  • Overall, Los Angeles area letter carriers were victimized by 204 dog bite attacks last year. Cleveland letter carriers suffered 94 bites; and Oakland 76.
  • In 2001, for the first time in more than a decade, the number of dog bites reported by letter carriers exceeded 3,000. In 2002, that number grew to over 3,800. In 2003, the number declined to just above 3,400, but that still means that an average of 11 letter carriers suffer dog-related injuries each delivery day.

What breeds bite the most? Pure-bred pit-bulls and rottweilers are at the top of the list, followed by German Shepherds, Huskys, Malamutes, Dobies, Chow-Chows, Great Danes, and St. Bernards.

And for those cat owners: No there is not an equivalent week for Cat Scratch Prevention.
