Buying Votes in the Land of the Orange

According to this morning’s Los Angeles Times, vote buying is alive and well in the land of the Orange.

To be more specific, Orange County election officials said Wednesday they were preparing to turn over 100 instances of improper voter registration for possible criminal prosecution. Included in this set are 36 complaints of Democrats being signed up as Republicans in central Orange County’s 34th state Senate District, one of the county’s most competitive legislative districts. At issue is a GOP registration effort that began two years ago, where the Republican Party paid bounties to registration workers of up to $10 for each new voter, hoping to make the central county friendlier turf for GOP candidates. In complaints submitted to the registrar’s office, several Democrats said they were either pressured into registering as Republicans or had their party switched without their knowledge. One individual said, “I told the gentleman that I was a Democrat, but he wanted to sign me up as a Republican so he can get credit for it”. The registration workers that did this have since been fired.

Buying votes. One would think we were in Chicago.
