Superman As A Christian Allegory

This morning on the van into work, I was discussing with ellipticcurve the previews we saw on Harry Potter. One in particular disturbed me: the preview for Superman Returns (official site). What bothered me was the lines from Kal-El, where he talked about giving his only son to help save the good people of Earth.

Since when did Superman acquire Christian overtones? Is this pandering to the “Passion of the Christ” crowd? I’ll note they are already doing such promotion for Narnia, which is one of the reasons I have no desire to see that movie.

P.S.: Two other snippets of this morning’s discussion:

  • Re: Happy Feet. I can just hear Stan Freberg saying, “…and they’re tap dancing on ice, too.”.
  • Can you imagine RPG games with golf-style announcers… you know, the whispering overvoice…
