Observations on a Season

Yesterday, the CTG/Ahmanson announced their 2009-2010 season. At least for the Ahmanson, I’m not thinking it is worth a subscription, but there are some individual shows of interest. Here’s what will be there:

  • “An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin,” June 23-28. (Season Bonus)
  • “Monty Python’s Spamalot” (July 8-Sept. 6)
  • “August Osage County,” which last year won the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for best play (Sept. 9-18)
  • “Mary Poppins” (Nov. 15-Jan.10, 2010)
  • “Dreamgirls” (Feb. 26-April 4)
  • Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” (June 30-Aug.22, 2010)

Of these, I’m only interested in Spamalot, Mary Poppins, and South Pacific. I’m unsure about August Osage County, but I might do it with Hottix. I have no interest in Dreamgirls: I saw the original, plus it will be at Cabrillo Music Theatre in October 2009 (I’m not sure how they do this: they had a local production of Ain’t Misbehavin’ about 6 months before the Ahmanson, and also had a local production of A Chorus Line about 6 months before the Ahmanson — they must know someone). My only seating worries would be Spamalot and Mary Poppins: I don’t know if I’ll be able to get Hottix, and they might sell out otherwise, but I can’t see buying a full season on that risk in this economy (not to mention with Hottix I can get $20 orchestra; with a season my best is about $45 for balcony).

There are a bit more details on the productions in this Broadway World story. The Mark Taper Forum’s 2009 schedule was previously announced — the only thing of interest is Parade from Sept – Nov 2009. What’s announced for the Douglas so far has little interest.

I’ll note there are a number of interesting shows on the theatrical radar in Los Angeles. I’ve highlighted some of these in my theatre plans section in my reviews, but I’ll note them again here as well:

  • The Wedding Singer” (June): Rep East will be doing this come June — to my knowledge, it is the first time it’s getting a production in the greater Los Angeles area.
  • big” (May/June): West Coast Ensemble will be doing this. It was a bomb on B’way, but I really enjoy the music by Maltby and Shire. WCE has done a wonderful job with “Assassins” and “Zanna Don’t”.
  • Is He Dead” (April/May): ICT Long Beach. This is a recently rediscovered Mark Twain comedy that was out in New York last year.
  • The Green Room” (May): Hermosa Beach Playhouse has been pimping this one for a year. It’s a new musical. I’ve heard the concept cast album, and it has some really enjoyable songs.

If folks are aware of other interesting shows coming to SoCal, please let me know. Theatre is my one vice one of my vices.
