As housing is currently on my mind, a few lunchtime articles related to housing, architecture… and ghosts…
- Cursed Ground. An interesting article in the Wall Street Journal posits the position that Wrigley Field must go. Actually, it’s a bit more blunt about it: “Destroy it. Annihilate it. Collapse it with the sort of charges that put the Sands Hotel out of its misery in Vegas. Implosion or explosion, get rid of it. That pile of quaintness has to go. Not merely the structure, but the ground on which it stands.” Why? Because as long as it exists, the Cubs will never win. Actually, the article is a fun read.
- Haunted Ground. In Boyle Heights there is a long closed hospital, the Linda Vista Community Hospital, that is believed to be haunted. Once the Santa Fe Coast Line Hospital (yes, that Santa Fe), it was closed in 1991 and became a home for filming various haunted hospital and jail scenes. The LA Times tells the story of its transformation into Senior Housing.
- Scary Ground (as in it will share the shit out of you). Someone has built a restroom at the top of a 15-story elevator shaft… and put in an industrial glass floor.
- Final Ground. Thanks to the Oschin Family Foundation, the California ScienCenter has now raised over half the funds it needs to move and house the space shuttle Endeavor. The new wing of the museum will be called the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center and is expected to open in 2017. The interim hangar, being built now, will be called the Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Pavilion and will display the vehicle horizontally. Once it moves to the permanent wing the shuttle will be positioned vertically, as if prepared for launch, for generations of museum visitors to see.
