I thought I had no such luck, but then I realized I had three groupatwos:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Deaths<\/strong>. You know you&#8217;re getting old when your college professors start to die. A little over a week ago, I reported the death of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.ucla.edu\/news\/news-archive\/2012\/2012\">Robert \u201cBuz\u201d Uzaglis<\/a>, who I had for a number of programming language courses. Yesterday, I learned of the death of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishjournal.com\/sci-tech\/article\/gerald_estrin_computer_pioneer_in_us_and_israel_dies_20120403\/#When:16:08:57Z\" target=\"_blank\">Gerry Estrin<\/a>. Gerry was a big supporter of the UCLA Student Chapter of the ACM, and I remember many an event at his house when he was CS Department Chair.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fast Food<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/leisure\/2012\/04\/03\/burger-king-new-menu-looks-lot-like-mcdonald\/\" target=\"_blank\">Burger King has updated their menu<\/a>: it is all yuppified and healthy and all such. Now if they just get rid of the creepy king. On the other side, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/articles\/2012-03-29\/kfcs-big-game-of-chicken\" target=\"_blank\">there is KFC, who has figured out how to do it right internationally, but is failing here at home<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dead and Dying Buildings. <\/strong>An interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ladowntownnews.com\/news\/the-stragglers-of-parker-center-surprise-same-people-still-work\/article_ea5c907c-7aad-11e1-9389-0019bb2963f4.html\" target=\"_blank\">article on the stragglers of Parker Center<\/a>, the former headquarters of the LAPD made famous by Dragnet that is now in decrepit conditions, but still housing part of the CSI team. Another piece of history that is dying are the United Artist Studios, where some of the most famous pictures&#8211;going back to the days of the silents&#8211;were made. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laobserved.com\/archive\/2012\/04\/demolition_underway_of_pi.php\" target=\"_blank\">Demolition of the Pickford Building is underway<\/a>, and more demolitions are coming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Music: <\/strong><em>Hotcakes<\/em> (Carly Simon): Older Sister<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you know, when I post my lunchtime news chum, I like to do things in threes.
