A quick note while the tea cools. When on travel, I use LAWA<\/a>‘s wonderful Flyaway service<\/a>. This is a bus service from VNY, $6 roundtrip, that takes one to and from the airport. It’s been running for 30 years. There used to be a flyaway service from West LA (where the Salvation Army is now across from the Federal Building), but that’s long long gone. More than 18 million people have used the flyaway since it opened in June 1975. <\/p>\n

So, in skimming the LA Times, what do I read<\/a>? It appears that LAWA is planning to add Flyaway service from Union Station. $6 roundtrip, with $6\/day parking. To run the Union Station FlyAway, the city’s airport agency signed a three-year agreement with the MTA to use 500 parking spaces, a kiosk to sell tickets, and portions of the transit plaza for bus pickup and drop-off. Of course, being at Union Station makes this really easy for folks on Metrorail or the rail transit lines. It is scheduled to open March 15. I just hope I can tell the busses from the VNY busses!<\/p>\n

Further, there may be more to come, for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority promised to open the park-and-rides as part of a deal with airport-area communities to end their lawsuit over the $11-billion LAX modernization plan. In the settlement, the city also shelved that plan. Officials also are considering locations in Chatsworth, Inglewood, Long Beach and Sylmar. All of these operations will be modeled after the Van Nuys FlyAway. There are also indications that if the Union Station FlyAway to LAX is successful, LAWA officials hope to provide express bus rides to Ontario International Airport.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
