As you know, this weekend was supposed to be the rapture, but it didn&#8217;t happen (of course, being Jewish it didn&#8217;t apply to me anyway). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/religion\/2011-05-23-camping-apocalypse-october_n.htm\">The radio host who spread the word essentially said, oops, I meant October<\/a>.  A few thoughts on this. As <a href=\"http:\/\/dieppe.livejournal.com\/\" class=\"lj-user\">dieppe<\/a> noted, how do we know that the Rapture didn&#8217;t happen. All we know is that this fellow&#8217;s followers didn&#8217;t get raptured. Remember: Sometimes G-d says &#8220;No&#8221;.\n<li><b>Splitting the Bill<\/b>. Ever wonder how restaurants make money. Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2011\/05\/22\/BULP1JIC5F.DTL\">an interesting article that shows where the greatest markups are&#8230; and what are the greatest bargains, in terms of value received<\/a>. In short: go ahead, order that steak. But skip the salad.\n<li><b>Pat Me Down Elmo<\/b>. How would you feel if you had Elmo come over your next flight&#8217;s PA system. It might happen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/24\/business\/24flier.html?src=rechp\">Here&#8217;s the story, as well as describing how Elmo goes through TSA checkpoints<\/a>.\n<li><b>Naming a School<\/b>. Ever wonder how schools are named? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gigagranadahills.com\/2011\/05\/be-true-to-your-school-no-matter-who-is.html\">This article explains the rules, at least for LAUSD<\/a>. In short, in LA Unified, Senior high schools are named in honor of deceased Presidents of the United States and other nationally\/internationally famous men and women, and whenever possible, the name of a secondary school should have some pertinence to California. Where there is a well-established community, a secondary school may also bear the name of the community, provided that it does not conflict with any other school named for the same community. So the debate is on: what to name the new school in Granada Hills? Bo Diddly? Leonard de Vinci Academy? James Cagney High School? Vasco N\u00fa\u00f1ez de Balboa High? FDR High?\n<li><b>He&#8217;s Dead, Jim<\/b>. Alas, I have a death to report. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/25\/science\/space\/25rover.html?hpw\">NASA is declaring the Mars Rover-No-More &#8220;Spirit&#8221; Dead<\/a>.
