Based on their success at Applebee&#8217;s, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrn.com\/article\/dineequity-plans-improvements-ihop?ad=full-service&#038;utm_source=MagnetMail&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_term=marklacter@aol.com&#038;utm_content=NRN-News-NRNam-05-04-11&#038;utm_campaign=DineEquity%20plans%20improvements%20for%20IHOP\">the corporate owners of IHOP have decided to renovate the menus<\/a>. They also plan to introduce IHOP frozen items to stores. In a larger makeover, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/money\/industries\/food\/2011-05-06-mcdonalds-revamp_n.htm\">McDonalds plans to revamp its stores to look more upscale and encourage people to linger<\/a>. In other words, they are learning from Starbucks. Make it look nice, and people will pay more.\n<li><b>Shopping<\/b>. An article in the St Louis paper discusses how a local store, Schnucks, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/business\/columns\/consumer-central\/article_adb1f8fa-7a55-11e0-ba1e-0019bb30f31a.html\">playing up their quality because the previous price-based ads didn&#8217;t take<\/a>. Related in some sense to that: if you didn&#8217;t see it over the weekend, the LA Times had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/opinion\/la-oe-morrison-joe-coulombe-043011,0,7789853,full.column\">a really neat interview with the Joe of Trader Joes<\/a>.\n<li><b>Cookbooks<\/b>. I first looked at this article because I read the head as &#8220;Incarcerated Cuisine from a Camarillo Restaurant&#8221;, but it actually has to do with prison cooking. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vcstar.com\/news\/2011\/may\/08\/incarcerated-cuisine-from-former-camarillo\/\">An inmate at a Texas prison has written a cookbook about how to cook only with prison comissary ingredients<\/a>: garlic tablets, chips, salsa, canned tuna, etc. I&#8217;m not sure I want to eat it, but it is an interesting article to read.
