A few days ago, I wrote a rant<\/a> about how movie reviewers don’t seem to like stage productions moved to the screen essentially unaltered, as happened with Rent<\/a> and The Producers<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Today, I read some interesting articles related to this trend. First, according to the Daily News<\/a>, neither Harvey Fierstein<\/a> nor Marissa Jaret Winokur<\/a> will be reprising their roles in the movie version<\/a> of the musical Hairspray<\/a><\/i> (which itself was based on a non-musical<\/a> John Waters<\/a> movie). At least they are not going with John Travolta<\/a> as had been rumored, but still. The casting is still wide open, but this does mean that the Tony-winning cast will not be on the big screen. Turning to an older musical, Dreamgirls<\/a><\/i>, which is finally being made into a musical<\/a>, the Daily News<\/a> also reported that Jamie Foxx<\/a> is doing the Dreamgirls<\/i> movie musical with Eddie Murphy<\/a> and Beyonce<\/a>. Those old enough will remember that this was Jennifer Holiday<\/a>‘s breakthrough role. Others in the original cast included Obba Babatund\u00e9<\/a>, Cleavant Derricks<\/a>, Loretta Devine<\/a>, Ben Harney<\/a>, Sheryl Lee Ralph<\/a>, and in the ensemble, Phylicia Ayers-Allen<\/a> (now Phylicia Rashad).<\/p>\n

What do you want to bet that these movies will get decent reviews, unlike the recent original stage musicals (which were hits) that moved to film?<\/p>\n
