{"id":3921,"date":"2010-05-05T12:02:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-05T19:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/?p=3921"},"modified":"2010-05-05T12:02:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-05T19:02:00","slug":"youre-getting-thirsty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/?p=3921","title":{"rendered":"You&#8217;re Getting Thirsty&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a few interesting news items from lunchtime news reading, all dealing with libations in one way or another:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>From the \u201c<b>The Old Brown Jug<\/b>\u201d Department:<\/i> The NY Times has a nice article today on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/05\/dining\/05white.html?hpw\" target=\"_blank\">the resurgence of&#8230; moonshine<\/a>. Yup, that old \u201cwhite dog\u201d is back (that\u2019s what was in those XXX brown jugs): the distilled grain liquor that hasn\u2019t been aged and acquired its color yet. Note, however, that this is definately a case of \u201cdon\u2019t try this at home\u201d&mdash;that is, making the stuff, not drinking the stuff.\n<li><i>From the \u201c<b>And You Thought Guinness Was Strong<\/b>\u201d Department:<\/i> Speaking of distillation, the LA Times has an interesting article on how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/features\/food\/la-fo-coldbeer-20100506,0,6908818.story\" target=\"_blank\">breweries are competing to make the strongest beer<\/a>, that is, a beer with the highest alcohol content. This includes &#8220;Tactical Nuclear Penguin,&#8221; a stout that measures 32% alcohol, and a 41% &#8220;quadruple India Pale Ale&#8221; called \u201cSink the Bismarck\u201d.\n<li><i>From the \u201c<b>Some Coffee Will Sober You Up<\/b>\u201d Department:<\/i> After all that drinking, you\u2019ll want some coffee. The LA Times has an interesting article on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimesmagazine.com\/2010\/05\/chasing-the-dragon.html\" target=\"_blank\">whether the quest for the perfect cup of coffee has gone too far<\/a>? Has it become absurd? Whatever happened to a basic cup of coffee?<\/ul>\n<p>Now, I must disclose that none of this has meaning for me. I\u2019ve (luckily) never acquired a taste for hard liquor, and as for beer, I think I\u2019ve <a href=\"http:\/\/cahwyguy.livejournal.com\/34674.html\" target=\"_blank\">only tasted one<\/a> that I could actually swallow more than a sip. Coffee? My attitude is that coffee is only palatable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chocolatemission.net\/2008\/05\/may-17th-trader-joes-chocolate.html\" target=\"_blank\">covered in dark chocolate<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baskinrobbins.com\/Nutrition\/product.aspx?Category=Ice Cream&#038;id=0108\" target=\"_blank\">blended into ice cream<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For me, the best \u201cliquor\u201d is <a href=\"http:\/\/cahwyguy.livejournal.com\/tag\/tea\" target=\"_blank\">a great tea<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a few interesting news items from lunchtime news reading, all dealing with libations in one way or another: From the \u201cThe Old Brown Jug\u201d Department: The NY Times has a nice article today on the resurgence of&#8230; moonshine.
