{"id":3501,"date":"2009-07-06T11:39:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-06T18:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/?p=3501"},"modified":"2009-07-06T11:39:00","modified_gmt":"2009-07-06T18:39:00","slug":"news-chum-dr-demento-returns-incandescent-light-bulbs-vanity-license-plates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/?p=3501","title":{"rendered":"News Chum: Dr. Demento Returns, Incandescent Light Bulbs, Vanity License Plates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, the feeding frenzy resulting from Michael Jackson and Sarah Palin has calmed down a bit, and a few interesting pieces of lunchtime news chum have surfaced:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>From the \u201c<b>Pico and Sepulveda<\/b>\u201d Department:<\/i> Gary Lycan (who has an excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/ocregister\/sections\/entertainment\/columns\/garylycan\/\" target=\"_blank\">radio column in the OC Register<\/a>) is reporting that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/articles\/kmet-schindler-one-2481875-klos-kabc\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Demento is returning to the airwaves<\/a> as part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesoundla.com\/?sid=590&#038;nid=129\" target=\"_blank\">a July 10 tribute<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socalradiohistory.com\/kmet.html\" target=\"_blank\">KMET<\/a> &#8212; The Mighty Met &#8212; on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesoundla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">KSWD 100.3 FM<\/a> (there was also a July 4 tribute on KLOS 95.5). The good Dr. will be on at 7pm \u201cplaying all the songs that became famous on my show at KMET like &#8216;Fish Heads&#8217;, &#8216;Another One Rides the Bus&#8217;, and &#8216;Pico and Sepulveda.\u201d No word yet whether he\u2019ll be followed by \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.floandeddie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flo and Eddie<\/a>\u201d.\n<p>The Mighty Met was a radio staple during my high school and early college days. Although I wasn\u2019t into the music they played at the time, I did listen regularly to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drdemento.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Demento<\/a> and I still remember <a href=\"http:\/\/www.united-mutations.com\/v\/mark_volman.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Flo and Eddie<\/a> to this day (explanation: right after Dr. D was the <a href=\"http:\/\/fortheloveofharry.blogspot.com\/2008\/11\/flo-eddie-by-fireside-august-4-1974.html\" target=\"_blank\">Flo and Eddie By The Fireside<\/a> show). When they became \u201cThe Wave\u201d and went to lukewarm jazz, Los Angeles lost one of its best music stations.<\/p>\n<p>(An interesting side note in the article: <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/MrEats\" target=\"_blank\">Merrill Shindler<\/a>, restaurant critic, is returning to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kabc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">KABC<\/a> with a new &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kabc.com\/showdj.asp?DJID=50549\" target=\"_blank\">Feed Your Face<\/a>&#8221; program, 4-7 p.m. Saturdays and 7 p.m. Sundays.)<\/p>\n<li><i>From the \u201c<b>A Bright Idea<\/b> Department:<\/i> The NY Times has an interesting article on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/06\/business\/energy-environment\/06bulbs.html\" target=\"_blank\">a new breed of incandescent light bulbs<\/a> &#8212; bulbs that have been engineered to be significantly more energy efficient and to meet new efficiency requirements. This is good news for those of us with dimmer switches (CFLs don\u2019t work well with dimmers), as well as those sensitive to the CFL \u201cflicker\u201d.\n<li><i>From the \u201c<b>Blue Plate Special<\/b>\u201d Department:<\/i> The SF Chronicle has an interesting article about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2009\/07\/05\/BAK918I6UD.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">the Golden Gate Special Interest Plates<\/a>, and how they might not be getting enough subscribers to be made. In general, sales of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/online\/elp\/elp.htm\" target=\"_blank\">vanity plates<\/a> dropped about 20% in 2008 from the year before. But vanity plates are still popular, with the \u201cKids\u201d plate and the \u201cWhale Tale\u201d plate taking the 1st and 2nd sales position. I have a kids plate, in order to get the \u2665 symbol, permitting me to say <a href=\"http:\/\/cahwyguy.livejournal.com\/tag\/car-tipping\" target=\"_blank\">\u2665CAHWYS<\/a>.
