We\u2019ve seen two established carriers go belly-up: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alohaairlines.com\/home\/home.php\" target=\"_blank\">Aloha<\/a> (1946-2008) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ata.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ATA<\/a> (1972-2008). We\u2019ve seen numerous models of aircraft be pulled for after-the-fact inspections (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/disp\/story.mpl\/headline\/biz\/5648651.html\" target=\"_blank\">737<\/a>s, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/newsfeeds\/articles\/newstex\/AFX-0013-24033140.htm\" target=\"_blank\">MD-80<\/a>s, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601103&#038;sid=a2miUmpfjvNQ&#038;refer=us\" target=\"_blank\">777<\/a>s, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wired.com\/cars\/2008\/03\/us-airlines-get.html\" target=\"_blank\">A320<\/a>s), often for maintenance problems that should have been caught during normal inspection.  We\u2019ve seen reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2008\/US\/04\/02\/cockpit.windows\/?iref=mpstoryview\" target=\"_blank\">dangerous conditions have been ignored<\/a>, and that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-fi-airlines4apr04,0,2755966.story\" target=\"_blank\">the FAA is too cozy with the industry<\/a>. All this while airline service goes down and airfares go up. <\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s next? Which airline will be the next to imitate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nokair.com\/NokConnext\/aspx\/Welcome.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">a dead parrot<\/a>? <\/p>\n<p>There are surely going to be investigations in all of this, and I would also expect changes at the FAA. Of course, we all know the root cause of the problem (although I\u2019m sure <a href=\"http:\/\/geah.livejournal.com\/\" class=\"lj-user\">geah<\/a> would disagree): the pendulum swinging too far towards deregulation. The DOD learned this when it tried acquisition reform, which didn\u2019t work. The financial markets have been learning this the hard way of late.
