{"id":11265,"date":"2016-03-22T19:28:36","date_gmt":"2016-03-23T02:28:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/?p=11265"},"modified":"2016-03-23T08:30:48","modified_gmt":"2016-03-23T15:30:48","slug":"thoughts-on-a-theatre-season-ahmanson-%f0%9f%8e%ad-geffen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/?p=11265","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on a Theatre Season: Ahmanson &#x1f3ad; Geffen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5041\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/userpictheatre2.jpg\" alt=\"userpic=theatre2\" width=\"100\" height=\"92\" \/>Well, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centertheatregroup.org\/\">Ahmanson Theatre<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AhmansonTheatre\">FB<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geffenplayhouse.com\/\">The Geffen Playhouse<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/geffenplayhouse\">FB<\/a>) just announced their upcoming seasons, so it is time for another &#8220;<em>Thoughts on a Theatre Season<\/em>&#8220;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>* &#x1f3ad; &#x1f3ad; &#x1f3ad; *<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Ahmanson Theatre<\/h3>\n<p>Back in January, when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cabrillomusictheatre.com\/\">Cabrillo Music Theatre<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CabrilloMusicTheatre\">FB<\/a>) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/hollywoodpantages.com\/\">Pantages<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PantagesTheatre\/?fref=ts\">FB<\/a>) announced their seasons (and after a moment of <a href=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/?p=11255\">silence for Cabrillo<\/a>), I wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Other Tour Musings: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aladdinthemusical.com\/\"><em>Aladdin: The Musical<\/em><\/a><\/strong> just <a href=\"http:\/\/playbill.com\/news\/article\/disneys-aladdin-announces-national-tour-382256\">announced their national tour<\/a>, starting in Chicago April-July 2017. Those dates mean it can\u2019t go into the Pantages until at least 2018, and this is show that I\u2019d expect to go into the Pantages. So it may show up at the Ahmanson in the Fall of 2017 (they haven\u2019t announced their season yet), or (more likely) it will be in the Winter or Spring of 2018 at the Pantages. It also sounds like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbill.com\/news\/article\/the-curious-incident-of-the-dog-in-the-night-time-will-be-uncovered-across-the-states-national-tour-announced-348505\">there is a tour<\/a> of <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/curiousonbroadway.com\/\">Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 It is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shnsf.com\/Online\/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=curiousincident&amp;BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=\">2016-2017 SHN San Francisco season<\/a>, so my guess is that it will be a fall show at the Ahmanson, because (a) it is unlikely they would delay it until 2018, and (b) they rarely, if ever, book plays into the Pantages. <a href=\"http:\/\/funhomebroadway.com\/\"><em><strong>Fun Home<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/rottenbroadway.com\/\"><em><strong>Something Rotten<\/strong><\/em><\/a> have also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbill.com\/news\/article\/fun-home-and-something-rotten-announce-national-tours-349553\">announced tours<\/a>; <em>Fun Home\u00a0<\/em>starts in late 2016; <em>Rotten<\/em> in 2017. Given the Pantages schedule, I\u2019m expecting both to show up at the Ahmanson. <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/schoolofrockthemusical.com\/\">School of Rock: The Musical<\/a><\/strong><\/em> has also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2015\/12\/07\/school-rock-musical-sets-national-tour-london-premiere-day-after-opening\">announced a tour<\/a>; although that\u2019s a show that would fit the Pantages audience better, the long sitdown at the Pantages means it will likely be an Ahmanson show. Gee. I\u2019ve just figured out the Ahmanson season :-).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/article\/Ivo-van-Hoves-A-VIEW-FROM-THE-BRIDGE-AMELIE-Musical-and-More-Headed-to-the-Ahmanson-in-2016-17-Season-Announced-20160322\">Ahmanson just announced their season<\/a>, and I ended up being 2 out of 6. Here are my thoughts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9931\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tdown.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Down\" width=\"20\" height=\"19\" \/> Arthur Miller&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lct.org\/shows\/view-bridge\/\"><em><strong>A View from a Bridge<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. Sep 7 \u2013 Oct 16, 2016. This is the Young Vic production, but it doesn&#8217;t really excite me.<\/li>\n<li><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9932\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tup.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Up\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkeleyrep.org\/season\/1516\/9309.asp\"><em>Amalie: A New Musical<\/em><\/a><\/strong>. Dec 6, 2016 \u2013 Jan 15, 2017<strong>. <\/strong>This premiered last fall under the direction of Pam McKinnon at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. I liked the movie, so this intrigues me.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/funhomebroadway.com\/\"><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9932\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tup.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Up\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/> Fun Home<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Feb 21 \u2013 Apr 1, 2017.Tony-winning. Need I say more?<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9931\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tdown.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Down\" width=\"20\" height=\"19\" \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiascotheater.com\/into-the-woods-3\/\">Into the Woods<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Apr 4 \u2013 May 14, 2017. This is the Fiasco 10-actor version, but I&#8217;ve seen the original and I&#8217;ve seen it in 99 seat. Why see it again?<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9931\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tdown.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Down\" width=\"20\" height=\"19\" \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jerseyboysinfo.com\/tour\/\">Jersey Boys<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. May 16 \u2013 Jun 24, 2017. Been there. Saw it.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/funhomebroadway.com\/\"><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9932\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tup.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Up\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/> <\/strong><\/em><\/a><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/curiousonbroadway.com\/\">Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Aug 2 \u2013 Sep 10, 2017. Oh yes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This still leaves the question of where <em>Aladdin<\/em> and <em>School of Rock<\/em> will end up: I&#8217;m guessing the Pantages after Hamilton; similarly, <em>Something Rotten<\/em> may also end up at the Pantages depending on timing, or the next season at the Ahmanson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>* &#x1f3ad; &#x1f3ad; &#x1f3ad; *<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Geffen<\/h3>\n<p>The Geffen in Westwood has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/arts\/la-et-cm-geffen-playhouse-constellations-barbecue-20160321-story.html\">also announced their season<\/a>. My thoughts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9931\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tdown.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Down\" width=\"20\" height=\"19\" \/> <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2015\/legit\/reviews\/barbecue-review-robert-ohara-public-theater-1201613925\/\"><strong>Barbecue<\/strong><\/a><\/em>. Sept. 6 to Oct. 16, 2016. Seen last year at the Public Theater in New York. O&#8217;Hara&#8217;s comedy follows two families &#8212; one white, one black &#8212; as they bicker and brawl amongst themselves at separate gatherings in a public park.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9931\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tdown.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Down\" width=\"20\" height=\"19\" \/> <\/strong><\/em>Margulies&#8217; <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dramatists.com\/cgi-bin\/db\/single.asp?key=971\">The Model Apartment<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em> Oct. 11 to Nov. 20, 2016. This debuted in 1995 and tells the story of a retired couple living in a condo.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9931\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tdown.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Down\" width=\"20\" height=\"19\" \/> Icebergs.<\/strong><\/em> Nov. 8 to Dec. 18, 2016. This takes place in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, following four friends negotiating professional and personal challenges. World premier of a Alena Smith play.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9931\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tdown.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Down\" width=\"20\" height=\"19\" \/> <\/strong><\/em>Benjamin Scheuer&#8217;s solo show <a href=\"http:\/\/thelionmusical.com\/#home\"><em><strong>The Lion<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. Jan. 4 to Feb. 19.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9931\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tdown.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbs Down\" width=\"20\" height=\"19\" \/> <\/strong><\/em>Matthew Lopez&#8217;s <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.matthewlopez.com\/plays\/legend.html\">The Legend of Georgia McBride<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em> April 4, 2017, to May 14, 2017.<\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10128\" src=\"https:\/\/cahighways.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/thumbs-side.jpg\" alt=\"thumbs-side\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/> Payne&#8217;s <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/nick-paynes-constellations-a-singular-astonishment\">Constellations<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em> June 6, 2017 to July 16, 2017. The elusive story involves a man and a woman, bound together by advanced physics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Plus two productions to be announced later.
