Monday Morning Musings

Must. Wake. Up.
Must. Not. Sleep. On. Vanpool. On. Ride. Into. Work.

For some reason, I woke up exhausted. While I’m waiting for my Gigantic Mug O TeaTM to cool down so I can get some tea in me and wake up, I thought I would write a few musings.

  • Yesterday, I went ice skating with my daughter. I used to be decent on the ice. Not any more. Only one fall though, but I’m still feeling it (at least my back is still complaining). She had fun, tho, and made some new temple friends.
  • Last night, we went to dinner with ellipticcurve and gyesika at Johnny Reb’s in Long Beach. Good food, and even better company. We will miss you, gyesika.

That’s it for now.

Must. Get. Brain. Working.

It’s all Relative

[For those following the saga, my back is feeling a little bit better. A day without lifting seems to be helping it.]

Today’s been a relative day… unexpectedly. S&F spent most of the day playing with her cousin N, who is just a little over a year older than her. The two of them had a great time, to all appearances. We have slowly converted N into a board game player (he got Puerto Rico for Chanukah, and has just learned Balloon Cup). We’ll likely see him next at Games Day 19 on January 22nd.

Of course, he had to get home somehow, and so his mom (R) came over to pick it up. We had a delightful afternoon reminiscing about my dad and her mom, looking at some of the stuff I brought back from my dad’s. This is the cousin whom I spent a lot of time with growing up; she’s only 4 mo. older than me, and in some ways we’ve been like siblings. It was a nice afternoon.

I also took some time to go through my fountain pen collection, this activity being prompted by a wonderful wood pen case from Levenger‘s that I received as a holiday gift from ellipticcurve (who deserves a big thank you). I have a remarkably nice collection: 2-3 Mont Blancs, a bunch of Parkers, even more Schaeffers, a few Waterman, a couple of Rotrings, and some nice handmade wood and marble pens. Of course, my largest collection is of the cheap Schaeffer pens, with steel nibs, that write pretty well. I’ve also got a lovely glass fountain pen and ink set that my wife got for me at Dickens Faire. So, my pens are now organized and sitting either in a nice pretty box (for the pretty pens), or a nice wooden cigar box (for the Schaeffers, cheap Parkers, and the Rapidographs that always need to be cleaned).

So, the year has started off pretty well (modulo the back). I note that LJ has been very quiet today; people must be out celebrating. Hope folks had a good one.

We’re Here…

[I would have posted this last night, but the DSL connection was very very slow (to the point of unusability). It is much better this morning.]

We have arrived safely in St. Louis.

The aesthetics of flying continue to go downhill. Both legs of the flights were sardine cans, 757s and 737s packed to the rafters. I remember the days when flying was comfortable… not any more! Mercifully, the process at LAX was easy. It was my first time checking baggage since 9/11, and United had these nifty self-check-in units, so the process went very smooth. TSA was organized, and the wait through the security line wasn’t bad, although both gf_guruilla and I had something in our carry-ons that made them want to hand-check them—after a second pass through, everything was fine. STL looks to be less organized; we’ll find out when we leave.

Our rental car is a Kia Rio, from Enterprise. Nice, albeit a little underpowered. The folks at Enterprise were extremely friendly.

We got together with my long time friend Linda R. out here. She’s the daughter of my mom’s best friend; Linda has known me all my life (and even before :-)). We’ll be spending a batch of time with her. We met her when we had dinner.

We scored on the hotel. About $45/night for 2 queen beds, a breakfast buffet, FREE DSL!, in a nice suburb, full cable channels.

That’s it for now. The rest of the family is still asleep. I’ll wake them shortly so we can get breakfast and go visit things. Not sure what we’ll do today yet: it will either be St. Charles, the Arch, or Forest Park.

A Delightful Evening

[First, you’re probably wondering why I’m posting this so early. No, no headache today—I’ve got a telephone meeting that starts at 6:00 AM, so I got in at 5:15 AM]

Last night, we had a delightful evening with ellipticcurve and her friend barelyproper. We were going to go picnic in the park and listen to the free concert of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, but it was about 101° in the shade at our house, and it would have been even hotter at the park, so we decided to have the picnic inside instead. We had a wonderful evening talking and sharing. ellipticcurve has good friends!

Visitors from Sedona

Today has been a much better day. Although a little cough remains, the cold is generally gone (yay!).

Additionally, we had some surprise visitors this evening: Some friends of ours who live in Sedona AZ were in town for a visit. We normally only get to see them when they are out here (we don’t get much of a chance to get out to Sedona, pretty as it is), and we had a delightful dinner with them (and gf_guruilla and Small&Feisty had a lovely afternoon with them).

A Memorable Memorial Day

Today was a very nice day.

It started out with cleaning my closet. Pulled everything out. Stuff that was too small, too stained, or something I would never wear went into a big plastic trash bag to be donated. Two LARGE bags of stuff. My wife did the same, and filled another two bags. As soon as we call LA Sanitation Bulky Item pickup to get rid of the dead sofa, we’re calling Council of Jewish Women to take another half-garage load. [For those who don’t know, National Council of Jewish Women will pickup your stuff and inventory it for you, giving you no excuse not to donate. And remember, it’s tax deductable!]

After that, we (my wife, my daughter (“Small & Feisty (S&F)”), and I) went to a wonderful Memorial Day Swim Party at a close friend’s (L and S’s) house (ellipticcurve was there, along with some other friends). We spent about 2 hours swimming, and then played a batch of games (S&F, L, T, H, and ellipticcurve played Munchkin, while J and I (that’s me) played Loco!. Then, T, H, ellipticcurve, and I played Ticket to Ride. Lastly, S&F, ellipticcurve, and I played Girl Genius. When not playing, others snacked, talked, and had a great time. Thanks L and S for a wonderful afternoon and evening.
