Busy, Busy, Busy

[First, a birthday callout to underpope, whose birthday is tomorrow. I’m sure you know the song by now… “Put another candle on your birthday cake…”]

Yet another day doing stuff around the house. The day started out in the garage, where I straightened out my work bench, and cleaned the area around the donate pile so as to distinguish it from the rest of the junk in the garage. Of course, since there was space, I had to fill it up, so…

I then went out and picked up a third CD storage unit. Now we have three units all the same on the wall, and it looks real nice. The old units have been added to the donate pile, unless they get rescued. I then spent the rest of the afternoon listing a bunch of CDs on Amazon Marketplace to sell. Some stuff wasn’t worth listing: why list something for 1 cent when Amazon has a 99 cent commission? I guess some folks don’t think.

I also got the last part of my Amazon shipments: Ben Franklin in Paris, Hallelujah Baby, and Pinchus and the Pig.

Tomorrow is our New Years Eve Gaming Party. It looks like it is going to be a small group. So it goes.

Right now, though, I’m tired, so I think I’ll go lie down for a bit, and then clean the kitchen.

Another Long Day…

While the wife and daughter mostly rested, being down with mild colds, I was busy, busy, busy.

After taking care of some financial stuff that had backed up while I was in Mission Viejo, I then turned to other business. First, I scanned some out of print Speed Circuit tracks for a fellow in France. These have been shipped off on a CD, and hopefully I’ll get a game back in trade: either Tigris and Euphrates or Modern Art. Yet again, Board Game Geek comes through. I then went off to the post office to mail the CD, thence to Trader Joes to do some grocery shopping. Those of you that don’t have the pleasure of a Trader Joes are really missing something.

I then toddled off to Best Buy to pick up some new CD Storage Units. These puppies are wonderful, soaking up gadzillions (well, up to 756) CDs. I got two units; I’ll probably be getting one more tomorrow to make a more uniform look. This is allowing us to get rid of a batch of mismatched CD and Videotape storage units. ellipticcurve may be the beneficiary for some of these. I spent the afternoon and evening loading these up. With what, you ask? I came back from Mission Viejo with a load of CDs that were my dads that didn’t fit with my stepmother’s musical tastes. Some didn’t fit with mine either; I’ll be putting those up on Amazon Marketplace.

I also had to fold in the shipment that came in from Amazon. This shipment included On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen for gf_guruilla; Follies (1971 OBC Highlights); Side by Side by Sondheim (1976 OLC); Sweeney Todd (1979 OBC); The Best of Randy Newman; How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (1961 OBC); Sherry (2004 Studio Cast); and Lucky Stiff (2003 OOBC). It also included the DVD of The Great Race—now I can introduce ellipticcurve to this movie. Push the button, Max.

We were able to get the roof repaired today. Looks like we’ll need to put on a new roof (2nd layer) this summer. Today’s roofer gave a verbal estimate of $5K with 30-year shingles. I don’t think we need 30-year shingles. Our 20-year shingles lasted 15 years (I don’t understand it either), and I can’t see being here another 15 years… plus they would be a 2nd layer. We’ll get some more bids as the spring comes.

Time to finish another mug of tea, and then go to bed. If the weather is better, perhaps tomorrow I’ll organize the donate pile in the middle of the garage so we can call National Council of Jewish Women for a pickup; alas, I don’t think it will happen before the end of the year. Can you tell I’m the son of an accountant?

I’m Glad to Be Home… But Am I?

We’re back home. I’ve been busy unpacking and putting stuff away since we arrived. I’m just about done. Whew, I’m tired.

So, what did I come home back to?

Well, first I discovered we had a small roof leak over the rains of the last days (enough to slightly stain the ceiling, not enough to drip). I’ve called in the patch guys, but they have reminded me we need to reroof (actually, add a 2nd layer on top of current 1 layer of asphalt shingles). So, we’ll have a couple hundred repair, followed by at least a $1K roofing job in the summer (homeowners out there: am I right that the minimum for any major repair seems to be about $1.5K?).

S&F has been cranky since she got home. She’s been obsessing about yet another teacher conflict that happened just before she left, where the teacher ran out of copies of the assignment, and told her to get it from a friend (not knowing she really doesn’t have that many friends in class). So she’s driving herself crazy about it. This has been a real bad year for her relationship with the teacher, but there’s not much the school can do, as there is no room in other classes. We can’t do anything until the school office reopens.

gf_guruilla came back with a “code in the node”. So she’s just been plopped down on the couch whilst I unpacked and dealt with everything. I’ve got a slight tickle, but I’ll just bluster through as I usually do. If you let a cold get to you, it is gone in a week. If you bluster through, it’s gone in 7 days, but at least you get something done!

I’ve still got to figure out how to fully integrate some of my dad’s stuff into my various collections. It will take a bit. In going through it, however, I’ve come to realize that I’m much more like my dad than I knew. gf_guruilla says that I got my mom’s brains and my dad’s temprement. Not that bad of a combination.

Have a good night, folks.

Weekends Are For Cleaning…

…at least this one is.

First and foremost, birthday wishes to profstevie.

Today’s been a cleaning and home day. So far, I’ve put up a wall-mounted TV stand for gf_guruilla in the Sewing Room [mmm, manly, 40-year old power drills (it was my dad’s), using stud detectors :-)]. I’ve been doing the delicates in the laundry, folding the stuff that’s dry, and washing the dirty stuff. I should be fully caught up shortly. On laundry weekends, I really understand the song Putting It Away from the musical “Heartbeats” by Amanda McBroom:

Now I don’t mind doing laundry
Hanging out the clothes.
I feel so fine
When that sweet sunshine
Runs around in my nose
My woolens know no static…
My stockings never cling…
My whites are white, my colors bright.
And my collars have no ring.
But something’s less that perfect
Here in paradise
Here comes that time again
‘that I just despise.

Putting things away.
Bringing in the sheets
Folding up the shorts, handing up the shirts,
Matching up the pleats
And socks are just like expectations,
one always gets away.
It can make you blue
There’s better things to do,
than putting things away.

(As an aside: I really do like that line “And socks are just like expectations, one always gets away.”)

And so, everything is folded in stacks in the laundry room, or hanging out to dry. Someone else can put it away (well, if they get it to bedroom, I’ll put my stuff away. Gotta set an example and all that rot).

Other than that, more icon cleanup (I’ve changed the blushing one yet again, cleaned up the stressed icon, and redone the general music icon). I guess I’m putting off the one thing I need to do: rework the software for soc.culture.jewish.parenting to work with listserv instead of listproc. The perl code that handles the randomization is pretty crufty and creaky.

ellipticcurve should be over shortly to help gf_guruilla in the Sewing Room. We really have grown to love having ellipticcurve around; in just a short time, she’s become a member of the family. A truly good person!

As for the arm: Better today. I had the insight that it might be like my sciatia, which is knocked down not by painkillers, but by a muscle relaxant. I’m trying to take some extra calcium and magnesium; if anyone have ideas for a non-prescription equivalent of Parafon Forte, let me know. [of course, if I’ve been looking straight ahead for a long time, the first look downwards is a killer!]

Found The Buggies…

Yeah. I think I found the major stash of the meal moths. It was in a 10 lb bag of white rice. Opened it up to cook it for dinner, and found loads of them. It’s now in the trash.

Back to cooking dinner for the wife and S&F when they get home from religious school. Punjab spinach chicken, brown basmati rice, and lightly curried spinach. Yum!
