Ye Old Music Meme

Back in 2004, I snarfed the following meme from patgund. Now I has iPod, and I can do it for real:

  1. Open up the music player on your computer (if you have one — the music player, I mean. Clearly you have a computer, because otherwise you couldn’t read this).
  2. Set it to play your entire music collection.
  3. Hit the “shuffle” command.
  4. Tell us the title of the next ten songs that show up (with their musicians), no matter how embarrassing. That’s right, no skipping that Carpenters tune that will totally destroy your hip credibility. It’s time for total musical honesty. You can put the list in the comment thread, or write it up in your blog or Journal and then post a link in the comments.

So, here goes:

  1. Something So Right (Paul Simon: Negotiations And Love Songs 1971-1986)
  2. When I Dream (Roger Whittaker: Changes)
  3. Courtin’ In The Kitchen (The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem: Hearty And Hellish)
  4. Rocky Racoon (The Beatles: The Beatles (White Album))
  5. Top Cat (Hoyt Curtain, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera: Toon Tunes: Funny Bone Favorites)
  6. She Is Still A Mystery (The Lovin’ Spoonful: The Best…)
  7. Lead-In And Song: We Got Annie (Charles Strouse & Martin Charnin: Annie (1977 Original Broadway Cast))
  8. Mama Who Bore Me (Reprise) (Lea Michele & Girls: Spring Awakening (2006 Original Broadway Cast))
  9. There is a City (Osnat Paz: Jerusalem of Gold/Hava Nagilah: Songs of the Six Day War)
  10. The Wells Fargo Wagon (Erich Kunzel: Cincinnati Pops Orchestra: The Music Man (1991 Studio Cast))
  11. On The Rim Of The World (Malvina Reynolds: Ear To The Ground: Topical Songs 1960-1978)

Yup, quite a mix. I should point out, for honesty sake, that there is one Carpenters album and one Barry Manilow album in the overall mix, but with almost 16,000 songs, the kitchen sink is in there as well.

(meme) Music Meme: Jr. High Edition

Everyone guessed my High School graduation year (Pacific Palisades High School, class of 1977). However, a more interesting list is my Junior High graduation year (Paul Revere Jr. High School, class of 1974). As before the rules I used were:

Go to http://www.musicOutfitters.com. In the Search box, enter the year you graduated junior high school. The first item returned should be the 100 songs from that year. Cut and paste them into your journal. Bold the ones you like. Underline your favorite. Strike through the songs you loathe. Put an “X” before the numbers of the one’s you’ve never heard of.

1. The Way We Were, Barbra Streisand
2. Seasons In The Sun, Terry Jacks
3. Love’s Theme, Love Unlimited Orchestra
X4. Come And Get Your Love, Redbone
5. Dancing Machine, Jackson 5
6. The Loco-Motion, Grand Funk Railroad
X7. TSOP, MFSB
X8. The Streak, Ray Stevens
9. Bennie And The Jets, Elton John

(meme) Translation Song Meme

The translation song meme, snarfed from me (who did it as a google meme), as well as ellipticcurve, among others. The direction was English to German to French to English. Why the camel icon? A camel is just a sheep after translation! I’m not bothering to screen responses.

(meme) Song Meme In The Spirit of the Day

A meme for the day, snarfed from barelyproper:

  1. Take the lyrics to a favorite song
  2. Go to Google LanguageTools, translate the lyrics into German, then from German to French, and finally from French back into English.
  3. Post the results verbatim.
  4. Invite friends to guess the song based on the interesting new lyrics.

What is things which we require for our Seder table? Those are the things which we require for our Seder table: We require a Seder plate for our Seder table. But the people ‘ the table are with the entour what us those the majority require.

What is things which we require for our Seder table? Those are the things which we require for our Seder table: We require a Kiddish basin. We require a Seder plate. But the people ‘ the table are with the entour what us those the majority require.

(meme) Sing me no song! / Read me no rhyme! / Don’t waste my time / Show meme!

A meme for a Sunday Morning, artfully prepared by shutterbug93:

Five shows I wish I’d had the chance to see on stage:

  1. Tenderloin. An older Bock-Harnick musical, rarely revived, whose music and lyrics I absolutely love. I’ve heard the book was bad.
  2. Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public. I think this lasted perhaps a week, but again, I love the music.
  3. I Do, I Do. Not the original with Robert Preston and Mary Martin, surprisingly, but the revival with Karen Ziemba and David Garrison.
  4. The Life. A great Cy Coleman musical that, surprisingly, has never played Los Angeles.
  5. Steel Pier. A great Kander/Ebb musical that, surprisingly, has never played Los Angeles.
  6. Mail. A musical done by the Pasadena Playhouse that has never surfaced again.

There’s three hours of my life wasted:

  1. Sisterella, at the Pasadena Playhouse. Imagine Cinderella as done by Michael Jackson. Give me the money? Feh!
  2. Phantom of the Opera. Ahmanson Theatre. Overblown hype.
  3. Sugar, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion.

Five shows I’m glad I managed to catch:

  1. Radio Gals at the Pasadena Playhouse. Wonderful. Featuring the wonderful Klea Blackhurst.
  2. Heartbeats at the Pasadena Playhouse.
  3. Les Jazz at the Mark Taper Forum. Cy Coleman’s last show, while he was alive.
  4. A Class Act at Pasadena Playhouse.
  5. Chicago, the original production, at the Ahmanson Theatre.
  6. Two Gentlemen of Verona, Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, 1973.

I should note there are many other Pasadena Playhouse musicals that should be in the above list: Forever Plaid, Closer than Ever, Oil City Symphony, A Tuna Christmas, Blame It On The Movies, Only A Kingdom, The People vs. Mona, Do I Hear a Waltz, Play On, Showtune…

(meme) Music, Music, Music

This is being done at the request of talonvaki.

  1. Total amount of music files on your computer?

None, unless there’s something squirreled in my “To Be Burned” directory. I normally don’t keep music on the computer, but on CDs. Call me old fashioned.

  2. The last cd you bought was…

Bought? We hit a Used CD store last weekend, and I picked up copies of Movin’ On (The Billy Joel Musical) (OBC, M/L Billy Joel), and Grand Hotel (OBC, Wright/Forrest/Yeston). Although not quite bought, I also burned the New York, New York soundtrack from vinyl to CD last weekend. Next up to burn is a real oddity: The music from The Art of Love (James Garner, Dick Van Dyke, Elke Sommer, and Angie Dickinson). So why am I recording this? The music was written and is being played by the late Cy Coleman.

  3. What was the last song you listened to before reading this message?

Right now, I’ve got on DirecTV Channel 832, which is playing the Barbra Streisand version of Children Will Listen from Into The Woods.

  4. Write down five songs you often listen to or mean a lot to you.

That’s hard. So here are four songs I refer people to (or listen to) a lot:
