Twenty-Two Years

Twenty-two years ago today gf_guruilla and I got married (in Woodland Hills, by Rabbi John Sherwood). Here’s looking forward to at least twenty more years…

(to the tune of the “William Tell Overture”)
Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary
Happy Anniversary, Haaappy Anniversary

Pour a cheerful toast and fill it, Happy Anniversary
But be careful you don’t spill it, Happy Anniversary

Ooooo Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary
Happy Anniversary, Haaappy Anniversary
Ooooo Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary
Happy Anniversary, Haaappy Anniversary

Happy she and happy he, They’re both as happy as can be
Celebrating merrily, their happy anniversary

Ooooo Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary
Happy Anniversary, Haaappy Anniversary
Ooooo Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary
Happy Anniversary, Haaappy Anniversary

We now state emphatically, it’s happy anniversary
Not another day could be, a happy anniversary

Ooooo Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary
Happy Anniversary
Happy (slow)
Happy (slow)
Happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy (fast) Anniversary!!!

Twenty-One Things

I recently saw a post on LJ that suggested an interesting tradition for anniversaries: For each year that you are married, post one thing that you love about your spouse. We were married in 1985, so this year marks year Nº 21:

  1. I love that she keeps her head in a crisis.
  2. I love that she knows how to calm me down when I start panicking.
  3. I love that she helps me think logically when dealing with big ticket
    items or expenses.
  4. I love that she knows how to think through situations logically.
  5. I love that she is a very loyal friend, going out of her way to help
    others.
  6. I love that she is able to express herself very well, and convey
information the information to others in ways they can understand.
  7. I love that she is a very good cook, coming up with creative
    gluten-free dishes.
  8. I love that she is willing to put away the laundry.
  9. I love that she pulls off very nice parties.
  10. I love that she has a good decorating sense.
  11. I love that she cleans up nicely 🙂
  12. I love that she puts up with my disappearing off to Boardgame
days and my working on the highway pages.
  13. I love the needlecrafting and fabric arts that she does.
  14. I love that she knows how to deal with my daughter when I’m getting
    frustrated.
  15. I love that she is active in my daughter’s school life.
  16. I love that she is willing to deal with family situations I don’t
    want to deal with.
  17. I love that she is willing to deal with contractors and repair
    critters.
  18. I love that she doesn’t spend too much on quilting and fabric
    supplies :-).
  19. I love that she has similar tastes in friends.
  20. I love that she enjoys going to the theatre with me.
  21. I love that she understands that I’m not romantically inclined.

Of course, this list doesn’t include the things I love about her that I can’t post on LiveJournal :-). Maybe next year. You’ll just have to wait and see.

Couple-Surfing

Reuters, via Yahoo News, has an interesting article on a phenomenon (Do doo be-do-do) [view] being increasingly seen: couple-surfing. As they describe it, a man and a woman sit side-by-side in a New York cafe, drinking beer, sharing food, and not saying a word — instead, they are typing on side-by-side laptops about the tunes played through a shared iPod:

“Realising that communicating via typing was far more comfortable … we conducted … our date without speaking. We traded headphones back and forth and typed and ordered beer and wine and more food … The waitress thought we were crazy,” wrote singer Amanda Palmer at http://www.dresdendolls.com/diary.

Now, to me, the interesting this is how LiveJournal was highlighted: evidently, there is a blog on the subject on LJ, started by Nick Currie (imomus) that shows a vast array of ways couples use the Net. The article notes that Couple-surfing can apparently be as mundane as telling each other to take the trash out, as intimate as sharing a book by a blazing log fire, or as showy as a masked ball. One person wrote, “Our new relationship was often the subject of my LJ entries and I would often say things in there that I wouldn’t tell him to his face.” Another couple — married for 12 years — say that for a while they communicated through weblogs without ever discussing their feelings face to face.

Hmmmm. At least GFG and I haven’t gotten to that level. She plays a form of word solitare on Earthlink Games while I update LJ! However, speaking about LJ, I saw a wonderful post on my FOAF list about, for your anniversary, posting one thing you love about your spouse for each year you’ve been married. I’ll have to remember to do this: coming up with 21 things should be easy. It would also be interesting to modify for birthdays: post one per year things you like about yourself for your birthday (or that you like about the birthday boy/girl).

Well, as Ian Shoales says, “I gotta go….

Anniversary Update&#151House of Blues Rant

As readers here know, yesterday was my 19th wedding anniversary. Here’s an update on what did and didn’t happen.

Gifts. I ended up getting gf_guruilla the promotional package at the Burke Williams spa, as well as a nice card from the company store. She hasn’t had a chance go to shopping for me yet. 🙁

Dinner. We ended up going to Versailles for dinner. Versailles is a Cuban restaurant that we used to go to when we were dating. Yum. Cuban Roast Pork.

Small & Feisty. The plan last night was for ellipticcurve (EC) to take Small & Feisty and the Karate Kid to the 7:30 PM They Might Be Giants concert at the House of Blues in Anaheim. This concert had been advertised as “All Ages” (we checked), so EC bought the tickets. They get there (after a 40 minute drive and dinner), and learn that at 6:00ish, a decision was made to age-restrict the concert to 16 and older. Yes, the money was refunded, and the kids got merch and shirts, but it created a hell of disappointment—both from the kids as well as the parents who were expecting the kids to be out.

[Rant On] I don’t blame the band on this one, but I surely blame the venue, and plan to write a strongly worded letter to them. I would have had no problem had the decision been made long in advance, but to change it about an hour before the concert is just poor form, and poor public relations. It is not as if the kids were unfamiliar with the content. We had kids strongly looking forward to this concert, and watching a video of TMBG from the mid 1990s when they got home is just not the same. Disappointed 9 year-olds are not fun. This does not make me want to go to a HOB venue. C’mon HOB: If you book a group that issues kids albums and did a kid concert last time they were in LA, you should expect kids at the show. [Rant Off]

[For ellipticcurve‘s rant, click here]

At least the kids took it well. EC took them out for ice cream and I think they hit some lego shops. We had a TMBG video for them to watch as well. But live music is so much better!

Sigh.

[Update: In the responses, you’ll find the letter we’re writing to them, as well as the letter my daughter wrote to them.]
