WinXP SP2—A Denial of Service Attack, or Worse

According to Yahoo!News, Mike Nash, the Microsquish VP in charge of Security, said that Service Pack 2 for Windows XP Home Edition will be about 70 megabytes and the update for Windows XP Professional will be about 92 megabytes.

Just think about this for a minute. Millions of Windows XP systems (I know we have two at home), each downloading between 70-92 Mbytes in one swell foop. What will this do to overall internet bandwidth? Will the internet crawl to a halt? What will this do to overall productivity?

Think about the poor, poor users who only have dialup, and a limited number of usage hours. How many hours will it take them do download it? Yes, it will be available by CD, but how long will that take to arrive? What vulnerabilities will be released during this window?

This, of course, excludes the 2nd of denial of service: all the programs that will break due to incompatibilities with the new patch.

Oh, the horror.

[Hmmm, I wonder what Billy-Boy looks like with a long grey beard? Does he have kidney problems? Perhaps this is the attack that Ridge hinted at?]
