By now you may have heard of the proposed Livejournal strike on Friday, March 21 to protest the elimination of the ability to create new ad-free no-cost accounts, and the short period where some interests were mistakenly filtered from the popular interest list (since corrected).
I am not planning to participate in this strike.
The originators of this strike believe that the content they create is so valuable that LiveJournal will be cut off at the knees if they do not post for a day. Although it might affect some subareas of LJ, it certainly won’t do that. In fact, the strike might even save LJ money as less bandwidth and storage is used that day, and as less of the no-cost no-ad users use the site. I doubt the strike will affect the behavior of the users that have ads on their accounts — for after all, they chose to create those accounts.
As I’ve said before, and I’ll say again: I’m here on LJ because it is an easy to use avenue for me to have an online blog, where I can have reasonable access controls (I wouldn’t get the latter if I ran my own blogging software). I’m not the type that will run up against any of the usage restrictions LJ is imposing (because that’s not in my nature). I’m also here because of the friends that I have made, most of whom don’t seem to be bothered by the corporate bru-ha-has.
