I know, for many of you, Pippin is a character in LOTR. Get real.
Pippins are the absolute best variety of apples. Even Thomas Jefferson acknowledged this. A wonderful, hard green tart and sweet apple. Alas, although they used to be quite common in Southern California, they seem to appear for a shorter and shorter season each year. It now seems to be about 3 days :-). In any case, my wife found some yesterday at Howes Markets. Yummm.
Yes, I’ve tried the Granny Smith. They don’t compare. Braeburns are closer, and the Honeycrisp isn’t bad, but the Pippin in my true favorite apple.
I just ate my first one of the season. Yummmm…
