Continuing with our “clearing out of the links”, here’s a collection about older technology that is still going strong, in some way, shape or another:
- PDP/8. A fellow has created a replica of the PDP/8 (except for the tape drives) using a Rasberry Pi. It even has das blinkenlights. It doesn’t say what operating system it was running? I don’t recall if the 8 ran RT11.
- Wingdings. Ever wonder why there are all the graphics fonts and why they have all their symbols? Here’s the explanation of why Wingdings exists. It turns out it was done by the folks behind the Lucida fonts, in the days when the easiest way to get graphics was to embed them in a font, which made them scalable. Today, the equivalent is all the Unicode graphics.
- Space Jam. For a site that is connected to a movie almost 20 years old, the Space Jam website is still, amazingly, out there and going strong. Here’s the story about how it came to be, and why it is still there.
