It’s Saturday, and you know what that means: Time to clear all the old and rubbery links out of the bookmarks and cook them up into a tasty stew. So lift up your heads from the I Love 99 debate for a bit, and have a little stew. In fact, looking at the links, this week’s post is quite food-centric:
- Where To Eat in the Valley. From WeLikeLA, here’s a list of the 20 Best Places to eat in the Valley. We’ve eaten at many of these — in particular, Brent’s and Lum Ka Naad, both of which are near our house. We’ve also eaten at Bun Me and Fresh Potato Factory (although I personally prefer Pizza Rev next door). There are a number on this list we need to try — quite a few down on the boulevard (i.e., Ventura Blvd.) in Sherman Oaks. They left off a few: our favorite BBQ joints (Mom’s in Van Nuys and Rogers Rib Shack in Northridge, although the latter is moving), and our favorite Middle Eastern joint (Ali Baba‘s in Granada Hills)
- Quiero Taco Bell? I tend to love all sorts of history. Here’s the history of the very first Taco Bell, and the attempts to save it. It was started by Glen Bell in 1962 in Downey CA, and was the second fast food chain he started (can you name the first?)
- Never the Twain Shall Meet. You’ve probably heard of the battle over Norm’s La Cienega. Another well known diner of a similar era was Twain’s in Sherman Oaks. Twain’s closed earlier this year, and it looks like it was going to be torn down to make a new Sharkey’s. But this time the preservationists won: Sharkey’s decided to upgrade the Twains into their new Sharkey’s. Sometimes the battle can be won.
Here’s one last item, which I won’t put in the bullets because it doesn’t fit the theme: 23 notoriously unrhymable words that have rhymes.
